Some of my friends' grandparents had privies rather than bathrooms. One man remembers a two seater. A woman whose grandfather was a medical doctor in Southport remembers a four seater: two for adults and two for children. Those privies don't still stand, but that home does. We all remember the Sears catalogs left for obvious purposes. Privies sometimes were replaced by a bathroom on the back porch with a toilet and tub. This was scary at night. I always was afraid the boogey man would be on the porch, or worse yet, in the bathroom. Sometimes there also was a hand pump on the back porch, which was the only source of water for the house.

There were large dining rooms, usually separated from the living rooms by a wide opening. In fishermen's families, the top sill of that opening was a good place to drive a nail to hang the current cast net for evening knitting. The large, usually oak, dining tables had puzzles and books on them more often than food, because most of the eating was done in a breakfast room or in the kitchen.

Whether we called them Paw Paw and Maw Maw or Grandmama and Granddaddy, many of us in our 70s and 80s have fond memories of our grandparents' homes. We spent a lot of time in those houses, so we fondly remember details. Several friends shared their memories with me for this column.

Almost all of these houses had front or back porches or both. Some had two front doors. There usually was a porch swing and rocking chairs, often of heavy duty wicker. There even might be a day bed where one could read and nap. Most of us in our 70s don't remember those houses without electricity, but it hadn't been there long. The electric plugs and lights were rudimentary. We all remember the bare light bulbs hanging down from the ceiling with a pull chain or string to turn them on. A socket with a plug could Nike Football Boots No Studs be added for a radio if it had a long cord. My cousin and I once tied a fake snake to the string in our teenage aunt's room. She came in one night, stepped into her dark room, leaned over her bed, and pulled the snake. "Terrified" doesn't do justice to her response.

Bathing was in galvanized wash tubs near the fireplace or wood stove in winter. Later, baths were taken in the claw footed tub in that back porch room. It had no heat or air conditioning and only one small window. That didn't matter because a bath was a favorite social event with several siblings Soccer Cleats Picture

The breakfast room was not just for breakfast. The main meal at noon, dinner, was eaten there. Dinner was a large spread with vegetables from the garden, fruit or preserves from the yard, and biscuits or cornbread (especially hoe cakes), with cobbler for dessert. After dinner, a tablecloth was spread over the leftover food or it was put into a "pie safe." The food was protected from flies (but not from heat) until supper, the evening meal. We all wonder why we never got food poisoning from leaving food out like that. I miss that wonderful way of life but I'm grateful for my modern conveniences. Aren't you?
